SUMMARY:Meeting & Speaker: Krystle Hickman
DESCRIPTION:We kick off our 2022-2023 Speaker Series on September 8th with California native bee hunter\, photographer\, and expert\, Krystle Hickman.  Krystle is a TEDx Speaker\, Artist\, Community Scientist\, and Photographer based in Los Angeles\, California. Through artful photography\, Krystle strives to increase awareness of the decline in native bee species as well as highlight their biodiverse ecosystems. Her photography has been featured in The LA Times\, children’s books\, and scientific journals. \nKrystle works with gardens like the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Arlington Garden\, regularly photographing and documenting their native habitats. She also collects data on rare bee species in the Mojave Desert\, Joshua Tree\, Anza-Borrego\, the Santa Monica Mountains\, yards with native gardens\, and more. \nShe was awarded a National Geographic Explorer grant in 2023 to create a book that features original photographs and documents rare native bees throughout California. The book will describe the incredible natural histories of these bees and how humans have impacted their life cycles: including what these bees experience after fire and during fire abatement\, their competition with invasive honey bees for food resources\, how climate change is impacting them\, and more. \n  \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Meeting & Speaker: Caleb Finn
DESCRIPTION:Caleb Finn is the CEO and Founder of Circular\, a social enterprise dedicated to reversing climate change and addressing food waste and insecurity through regenerative agriculture. \nWhile working as a Civil Engineer (structures)\, Caleb pursued his passion for sustainable living and transformed his suburban Orange County home into a micro-homestead\, complete with orchard and vegetable garden. As part of that homestead\, he created a system repurposing food and garden waste from his own family and neighbors with the help of earthworms and chickens. \nConfronted with the broader challenges in the global food system\, including misuse of food waste\, poor food nutrition and quality\, rampant food insecurity\, and commercial farming’s drastic impact on the climate crisis\, Caleb developed the Circular Solution: Collect food waste from local restaurants and grocers\, convert it into the greatest organic regenerative fertilizer known to man – worm castings – then partner with local farms to improve food quality and availability. After winning the UCI New Venture Competition\, Caleb focused full-time on Circular to make a significant impact on the global climate crisis\, assembling a talented team and securing partnerships with local restaurants and the UC Agriculture Department. \nApart from his work as an engineer and in sustainability\, Caleb also enjoys spending time with his family and 3 children\, volunteering as a UC Master Gardener\, snowboarding\, scuba diving\, competitive video games\, reading the Bible\, and volunteer ministry work. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Meeting & Speaker: Lisa D. Foster
DESCRIPTION:Join us on December 8th  for our general meeting to hear the Lisa D. Foster give a presentation titled How I Became the Bag Lady: How I started a business for a greener world and changed the way America Shops. \nIn 2005\, the U.S. was throwing away a billion plastic bags a day. That was when Lisa discovered the impacts of all those bags on the environment and our health. She became obsessed with getting America to switch to reusable bags. And for the next 12 years  dedicated herself to becoming the “bag lady”\, an entrepreneur whose mission was to save the world\, one bag at a time. Through her experiences\, she inspires audience members to become aware of how the little choices we make every day\, like reusing a bag\, have a big effect on our world. \nLisa D. Foster\, Ph. D.\, ACC offers coaching and group training to help managers become more effective leaders by using emotional intelligence to create the conditions for high performance. In 2005\, she founded 1 Bag at a Time\, Inc.\, a first-to-market reusable grocery bag company. A former high-school English teacher\, she became a pioneer in the fight against single-use plastic and a top supplier of reusable bags in the US. She sold her business in 2017. As a coach\, she shares her expertise in leadership and emotional intelligence with her clients and inspires others to make a difference in their communities and organizations. In addition to coaching\, Lisa speaks\, leads workshops\, and writes about emotional intelligence\, leadership\, and storytelling. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Matt Willey to Speak at LAM
DESCRIPTION:The city is all abuzz!  Come see muralist Matt Willey speak at the Laguna Art Museum.  Join Willey for a discussion about the experience of creating his latest mural right here in Laguna Beach and how it fits into the global puzzle – offering powerful moments of connection in the community and around the world. \nWhat can we learn from the honeybee? Artist Matt Willey is in the process of painting a mural in Downtown Laguna Beach to help fulfill his mission to hand-paint 50\,000 honeybees – the number in a healthy\, thriving hive – in murals around the world. The global hive Willey is painting is a metaphor for the connectedness of all things. \nThis program is presented in partnership with the Laguna Beach Garden Club. \nAdvance tickets are recommended. Museum members: $20\, Non-members: $30. For tickets\, click here.

SUMMARY:Meeting & Speaker: Alan Barry
DESCRIPTION:Take an engineer and an educator\, move them to South County\, and they discover birds! Alan Barry and his wife\, Maggie\, moved to Rancho Santa Margarita 26 years ago. They were immediately enthralled by the variety of birds in their yard and sought out a bird feeding resource. This brought them to Wild Birds Unlimited in Mission Viejo. After having been customers for several years\, they bought the franchise from the original owner in 2014. Now both retired from their prior careers\, Alan and Maggie continue to enjoy operating the store with their team of fellow bird lovers. \nJoin us at our General Meeting on March 8th to hear our speaker Alan Barry give a presentation on The Joy of Bird Feeding.  He’ll be speaking about all aspects of the hobby\, focusing on the actions you can take in your own yard to attract our local birds. \nQuestions? We’d love to hear from you!\n\n \n URLThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n PhoneI am interested in:\n \n Sponsorship\n \n \n Membership\n \n \n Volunteering\n \n \n Speaking opportunities\n \n \n Other\n Message*9+7=?*CAPTCHA
