SUMMARY:Meeting & Speaker: Ashley Irene
DESCRIPTION:Join us at our General Meeting on March 13th where Ashley Irene will speak on the topic “The Art of Edible Potager.” \nAshley Irene is a member of the Garden Coach Society and a certified garden designer\, but her style is also inspired by her grandparents. Irene grew up on her grandparent’s farm in central Wisconsin and has always had a love of farming. She was a fashion design major\, giving her an eye for design\, that later came in handy in creating her own gardens. She later earned her MBA and served as a brand consultant until COVID hit when she began her company Heirloom Potager. Irene’s showcase kitchen garden situated in front of her 1920’s French Tudor home in Floral Park in Santa Ana that she shares with her husband Nathan\, has inspired many neighbors to reach out to her about starting their own gardens. \nPotager\, a French word for home kitchen garden\, is where the inspiration for Ashley’s company came from\, it was the springboard for her company\, Heirloom Potager. Her client list runs the gamut from award winning chef’s and mixologists\, to the most discerning developers\, curators and homeowners\, her company creates timeless edible gardens and landscapes in Southern California and beyond. Her work has been featured in Orange Coast at Home\, Orange County Business Journal\, Riviera Magazine\, and the Orange County Register. \nJoin us from 9:30-10:00 a.m. for social time and refreshments\, the meeting begins promptly at 10:00 a.m. Meetings are held at Laguna Presbyterian Church in Tankersley Hall located at 415 Forest Avenue\, Laguna Beach\, Ca. SUMMARY:Meeting & Speaker: Greg Salmeri and Laurie Resnick
DESCRIPTION:Join us at our General Meeting on October 10th to hear Greg Salmeri and his partner Laurie Resnick speak on decorating for the holidays with plants. Greg and Laurie have spent decades transforming indoor environments using plants\, furnishings and decorative flourishes. The pair began their 32-year partnership as interior plantscapers\, an element of their business they still maintain\, along with the Associated Group\, which produces large-scale holiday decorations. \nThey are the owners of Rolling Greens\, which is comprised of 2 acres of landscaping\, garden and a home design emporium in the Arts District in Los Angeles\, in addition to 2 additional stores in Studio City and Beverly Grove. Greg and Laurie spent three years planning and constructing the 15\,000 square foot showroom that contains various smaller spaces ranging from a prep kitchen to a gallery\, and the other adapted into a greenhouse. This magnificent store is the flagship of Rolling Greens. This is where they developed the concept of a full-service gardening store that then developed into an event space as well. \nGreg loves to collect eclectic items from around the world and then find perfect homes for each piece. From Opium beds\, French wrought iron chairs to fountains to everything in between. He loves French modern and loves to create a super eclectic space in his own spectacular home garden. Greg states that his love of the garden came from his mother\, who was an avid gardener. Greg is an incredible friend of the Laguna Beach Garden Club and he opened his magnificent Emerald Bay Garden to the club for the 2019 tour. That began the legacy of tours being sold out\, thanks to his incredible generosity. This meeting will surely be a packed house to see these speakers show us how to decorate like they do for their celebrity clients! SUMMARY:Meeting & Speaker: Danielle Hahn
DESCRIPTION:Join us at our General Meeting on September 12th to hear award-winning rosarian\, Danielle Hahn\, speak on the history of Rose Story Farm. Danielle Hahn and her husband Bill started Rose Story Farm in 1998 on their fifteen-acre farm in the Carpinteria Valley in Central California. Rose Story Farm began in 1998\, when they decided to try growing 1000 rose bushes on a half-acre of their lemon and avocado farm. The couple imagined an old-fashioned rose farm\, with the radiant hues of European and pre-1950 American varieties in bloom across their farm. They named the farm Rose Story Farm because roses are central to some of the family’s most enchanting experiences of their family-owned business. \nDanielle Hahn was born in Santa Barbara and attended local schools until she entered Stanford University. She graduated with honors three years later\, with a BA in psychology and a minor in Italian. Returning to Santa Barbara\, she opened a series of retail establishments while at the same time being the founder and managing partner of an innovative marketing firm that designed and launched events and premiere parties for the entertainment industry. Danielle was honored with the Great Rosarian of the World award in 2014. Rose Story Farm and Danielle have been featured in Santa Barbara Magazine\, Wine Country Living\, Sunset Magazine\, Oprah Magazine\, Martha Stewart Living\, Veranda\, and The Wall Street Journal just to name a few. Television coverage of Rose Story Farm has been presented on California Heartland\, A PBS special\, The Today Show and Martha Stewart’s Living online series American Made. SUMMARY:Meeting & Speaker: Alan Barry
DESCRIPTION:Take an engineer and an educator\, move them to South County\, and they discover birds! Alan Barry and his wife\, Maggie\, moved to Rancho Santa Margarita 26 years ago. Through her experiences\, she inspires audience members to become aware of how the little choices we make every day\, like reusing a bag\, have a big effect on our world. \nLisa D. Foster\, Ph. D.\, ACC offers coaching and group training to help managers become more effective leaders by using emotional intelligence to create the conditions for high performance. In 2005\, she founded 1 Bag at a Time\, Inc.\, a first-to-market reusable grocery bag company. SUMMARY:Meeting & Speaker: Caleb Finn
DESCRIPTION:Caleb Finn is the CEO and Founder of Circular\, a social enterprise dedicated to reversing climate change and addressing food waste and insecurity through regenerative agriculture. \nWhile working as a Civil Engineer (structures)\, Caleb pursued his passion for sustainable living and transformed his suburban Orange County home into a micro-homestead\, complete with orchard and vegetable garden. As part of that homestead\, he created a system repurposing food and garden waste from his own family and neighbors with the help of earthworms and chickens. \nConfronted with the broader challenges in the global food system\, including misuse of food waste\, poor food nutrition and quality\, rampant food insecurity\, and commercial farming’s drastic impact on the climate crisis\, Caleb developed the Circular Solution: Collect food waste from local restaurants and grocers\, convert it into the greatest organic regenerative fertilizer known to man – worm castings – then partner with local farms to improve food quality and availability. After winning the UCI New Venture Competition\, Caleb focused full-time on Circular to make a significant impact on the global climate crisis\, assembling a talented team and securing partnerships with local restaurants and the UC Agriculture Department. \nApart from his work as an engineer and in sustainability\, Caleb also enjoys spending time with his family and 3 children\, volunteering as a UC Master Gardener\, snowboarding\, scuba diving\, competitive video games\, reading the Bible\, and volunteer ministry work. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Meeting & Speaker: Krystle Hickman
DESCRIPTION:We kick off our 2022-2023 Speaker Series on September 8th with California native bee hunter\, photographer\, and expert\, Krystle Hickman.  Krystle is a TEDx Speaker\, Artist\, Community Scientist\, and Photographer based in Los Angeles\, California. Through artful photography\, Krystle strives to increase awareness of the decline in native bee species as well as highlight their biodiverse ecosystems. Her photography has been featured in The LA Times\, children’s books\, and scientific journals. \nKrystle works with gardens like the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Arlington Garden\, regularly photographing and documenting their native habitats. She also collects data on rare bee species in the Mojave Desert\, Joshua Tree\, Anza-Borrego\, the Santa Monica Mountains\, yards with native gardens\, and more. \nShe was awarded a National Geographic Explorer grant in 2023 to create a book that features original photographs and documents rare native bees throughout California. The book will describe the incredible natural histories of these bees and how humans have impacted their life cycles: including what these bees experience after fire and during fire abatement\, their competition with invasive honey bees for food resources\, how climate change is impacting them\, and more. \n  \nQuestions?
